To find the best mobility scooter for you, you need to consider how you intend to use it, how often, and how it will be stored and transported. You also need to consider your physical condition, such as your ability to walk, stand, sit, and control the scooter.

If you have any questions or need any help, we are here for you. You can call our Mobility Experts at 1-844-335-8631 (we’re available Mon-Sat 9:30 am – 5:30 pm EST) or email us at We will guide you through the process and help you find the best solution for your mobility needs.

All about mobility scooters

Powered mobility scooter are also known as a handicap scooter, disability scooter, or medical scooter. They are devices that can help you move around with ease and comfort. It is similar to a wheelchair, but designed like a motor scooter, with an electric drive system and a steering wheel or tiller.

A mobility scooter can have a huge impact on your quality of life and independence. It can give you the freedom to go anywhere at anytime, whether you’re shopping, visiting friends and family, or off on holiday. It can also improve your health and well-being, by reducing pain, fatigue, and isolation.

Portable/Travel Scooters

These are just what their name implies, ready to get you on the road. Models in this category disassemble for easy transport in the trunk of most cars. Portable scooters are easy to lift into the trunk, with the heaviest piece on some models weighing as little as 22 pounds. Sealed batteries make them airline safe (*lithium batteries need to be removed and carried on the plane with you). As you might imagine, these travel scooters are compact so we do not recommend them for people over 5'10" or 300 pounds.

Mid-Size Scooters

These are ideal for users who want a balance between portability and performance. Models in this category are more comfortable and durable than travel scooters, but still easy to transport and store. Mid-size scooters have larger seats, longer battery life, and higher weight capacity than travel scooters. They can handle indoor and outdoor use, but may not be suitable for rough terrain or long distances.

Full-Size Scooters

Full-sized scooters are designed for users who want more features and power. The individual pieces of a full-sized scooter are heavier and bulkier than those of a travel scooter. Some full-size scooters can be dissembled, not all of them and we do not recommend it. Each piece is significantly heavier than those of a travel scooter. Full-sized scooters have an excellent range of standard features and optional upgrades. Full size scooters perform well on smooth outdoor surfaces and provide hours of ride time. Their turning radius is typically larger than a travel scooter and they can also have wider overall widths. Make sure to measure your doorways and consider any tight spaces that you might need to maneuver in your home. We always suggest thinking about long narrow hallways and tight turns in the bathroom.

Heavy-Duty-Size Scooters

If you weigh over 400 pounds, a heavy duty scooter might be a great mobility option for you. These scooters offer wider seats and suspension options for comfort, there is sure to be a heavy-duty scooter that meets your needs. Heavy duty scooters are designed for users who need more stability and performance. They can handle rough terrain, steep hills, and long distances. They have larger tires, higher ground clearance, and more powerful motors than other scooters.

When choosing a mobility scooter, there are some features that you need to consider, such as:

  • Portability: This is how easy it is to transport the scooter. Travel scooters can be taken apart, and the parts can be put in the trunk of your car. Full-Size Scooters need a vehicle lift or ramp to transport.
  • Assembled Weight: This is how much the scooter weighs when it is put together. Scooter weights can vary from 50 lbs. to 200 lbs.
  • Turning Radius: This is how small the scooter can turn in a circle. A small turning radius makes it easy to operate and move around tight spaces.
  • Ground Clearance: This is the distance between the bottom of the tire and the scooter's base. Low clearance makes the scooter more stable. High clearance is needed for outdoor use to prevent damage to the scooter.
  • Headlights: These are useful for lighting up dark or poorly lit areas.
  • Suspension: This is a feature that makes the scooter more comfortable when driving on uneven surfaces, such as sidewalks. The suspension absorbs the shocks and bumps.
  • Seat Options: Scooters have two main types of seats, stadium seats with low backrests and full back captain seats. These seats have different widths and depths. For optimal comfort, you need to choose a scooter that has the right seat size for you.
  • Maximum Incline: This is how steep the scooter can climb safely. This is important to consider when using the scooter on outdoor surfaces, such as sidewalks and ramps.

Should I buy a scooter with 3 wheels or 4?

One of the bigger decisions in choosing a mobility scooter is whether to choose a model with 3 wheels or 4 wheels.

Scooters with 3 wheels have a smaller footprint and are easier to man-oeuvre, but they may be less stable. 4-wheel mobility scooters are configured much like automobiles with two drive wheels in the back and two wheels for steering in the front. This makes them much more stable and suitable for handling a variety of terrain including curbs and short stretches of grass or gravel.

If the scooter is for indoor use, you may want to choose a three-wheel scooter that maneuvers around corners better. If you prefer a four-wheel scooter, select one with smaller wheels and a tighter turning radius. Measure doorways to ensure the scooter will fit through.

Generally, larger people need larger scooters because they have more room and larger motors. Larger motors are more powerful for hill climbing. Taller people often prefer 3-wheelers because they have much more leg room. All scooters have a specified maximum weight capacity which cannot be exceeded without voiding the warranty, but we have scooters rated up to over 200kg!

We were lucky enough that Charlene took a couple of pictures showing how deliveries work, with her new Scooter.

Charlene, on her order:

"Today was a very exciting day. I got my first scooter thanks to Rasa. She was so helpful with me. In matters of minute I purchase my first scooter. I did not try it out yet, it was raining... Going to need a rain coat Hmmmm! I love the color metallic navy (blue). It's even bigger than I though which I don't mind at all. I will feel safe in it. The stitching on the seat is great. I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and a very bad back. This scooter will help me be more mobile. Now I will be able to go picture hunting and tea at my daughter. The delivery man was so nice and careful with my scooter. He made sure everything was ok before he left."

ZooMe Auto Flex

For the second time in 3 days, Richard has come to my rescue. I love, love, love this guy. Another 1-minute or less fix for my scooter. Mr. Boss of Richard, he deserves more than an ‘atta boy”. See what you can do. Thanks again, Richard. Called the office and spoke to Richard this morning. My ZooMe Auto Flex scooter was in the folded position with no battery in place. I could not, for the life of me, figure how to unfold it manually in order to put in a battery and charge it up. Richard solved my problem in literally 30 seconds! All systems are now go and the new battery is charging. Thanks Richard and Scooter Country Canada.

Raptor (3-Wheel)

Scooter Country is a blessing to those with mobility issues! They are an Amazing company to deal with. The only company that actually helped me. There is no one else I will ever deal with. I was in need of a scooter in Atlantic Canada. Not one scooter company would even talk to my insurance company. Not One! I called Scooter Country, and was told to simply email my claim info and they did the rest! They have kept me informed during the whole process which is a rarity among companies these days. Excellence is a title the whole staff deserves! Thank You so much Scooter Country. You changed my life!

Pride Victory LX (4-Wheel)

What an amazing company.
I called my local Scooter Company where I have purchased a power chair previously expecting a little bit of a discount. They had a sale on, full retail - about $3000, only to find out it didn't come with batteries, so that was a no go. I found Scooter Country and the prices were incredible and did include the batteries and a free rear basket. Kudos to Rasa, she was over the top helpful and quick to help me out. I can't say enough about Scooter Country. Simply the best. Try them you won't be sorry. Regards Ferg

Pegasus PRO (4-wheel)

Rasa was extremely helpful to us choosing what options we wanted for my mum's new scooter. She took her time explaining about the available options and emailing us details of the different colours. Once ordered we dealt with Richard who was also extremely helpful in covering the details of the delivery. The scooter was almost half the price of the three other mobility scooter retailers we had visited and the service was still excellent. Everything went very smoothly and the scooter was delivered to my home well within the timescales they suggested. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. Five stars is very well deserved.

Jazzy® Zero Turn (4 Wheel)

Outstanding service from Scooter Country. We had an unusual purchase because my mom is based in the US and is spending the summer in Canada. The folks at scooter country were extra cautious about the cross country purchase, but to me that is a sign of a company that truly cares about doing the right thing for their clients. Everyone we encountered went above and beyond. Well done Scooter Country. Highly recommend this company. When working with seniors, this is exactly the type of company you can feel 100% secure dealing with. Mom has her mobility back. Jazzy Zero Turn is a perfect fit!

Pride GOGO Sport (3-Wheel)

Talked with Rasa from Scooter Canada about my needs and she went over the pros and cons of the various models. After sending me a quote, I paid with a credit card and within the week it arrived on my doorstep after going through a pre inspection at their location to make sure everything worked. Have been using a couple weeks now and love it. Staff were informed , delivery quick and easy so highly recommend!!

Invacare Leo 4-Wheel

I’ve owned an Invacare Leo 4 wheel scooter for a few years now. I love the way it operates. Easy to use, durable and reasonably priced. I just had a small issue and spoke to Richard who was very helpful. Would recommend Scooter Country to anyone in the market for a scooter.

Colibri (3 Wheel)

We purchased this 3 wheel scooter for my wife who has Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyagia. It has been amazing, allowing her to easily get around. It assembles/disassembles very easily, and the individual parts are light and easy to pack into our small SUV.
