Home Accessibility with a Vertical Platform Lift (VPL)

Vertical Platform Lift (VPL)

For many, a multi-story home can present challenges, especially for individuals with mobility issues. Vertical Platform Lifts (VPLs), often referred to as wheelchair lifts, porch lifts, outdoor lifts, or outdoor home elevators, are a fantastic solution that can dramatically improve home accessibility. We recently completed an installation that perfectly illustrates the benefits of this technology.

The Installation Process: Our project, which you can see in this video, involved installing a VPL on an existing deck. The process included building a sturdy new wooden platform for the lift and then carefully securing the metal lift mechanism. The final result is a seamless and safe way to move between levels, as seen in the “After” shot of the completed installation.

Why a VPL is a Great Choice for Home Accessibility:

Safety: VPLs provide a secure and stable way to navigate elevation changes, reducing the risk of falls and injuries that can occur with stairs.
Independence: By making all levels of a home accessible, VPLs allow individuals to move freely and independently within their own living space.
Space-Efficient: Unlike long ramps that require a lot of horizontal space, a VPL has a compact footprint, making it ideal for smaller areas or existing deck configurations.
Increased Home Value: Installing a VPL not only improves the quality of life for current residents but can also increase the home’s value by making it more accessible to a wider range of potential buyers.

This installation video is a great example of how a VPL can be a transformative addition to a home. It’s a practical and effective way to ensure that a home is comfortable, safe, and accessible for everyone.

Kelly was extremely helpful and walked me through my purchase for a travel wheelchair that is actually better than my ADP wheelchair. I am so incredibly impressed by the C lite and the speed in which Mobility 1st was able to get it to me. Thank you.

We found customer service at Mobility 1st exceptional. We found ourselves needing to replace a damaged CPAP mask late on a Friday night. We were delighted to find that Mobility 1st actually has Saturday hours. We were over the moon to see that the unit we have been waiting for locally to arrive on back order was sitting on the shelf. Marion has been more than gracious and patient with my 89 year old father as we teach him how to use his new mask(s) and machine. We have been so impressed that when it came time for his walker upgrade we knew exactly where we would return. Lashimi (I apologize if I have spelled your name incorrectly) did not disappoint. Kind and patient, knowledgeable, no appointment necessary. Thank you very much. Definitely willing to recommend Mobility 1st to others, it is worth the drive!

I purchased an Eclipse Medical Pioneer Trailmaster scooter through Robert McKinlay at Mobility First here in London Ontario. I really appreciate Robs assistance. Rob had to special order the colour's that I wanted, along with the accessories that I selected. On top of that, on the day that I picked it up, I added another accessory. Rob got it done for me! Of course, the first thing that I wanted to do, was to go for a cruise and go shopping at my favorite store. This beaty of a scooter performs exactly as specified. Lots of power and a long range. I'm 100 percent satisfied.

I recently purchased a power wheelchair from Mobility 1st. Robin, president and co-owner , was a pleasure to work with. Because I physically could not go to the showroom, she came to my apartment to do an in-home assessment and also brought a trial wheelchair with her so that I could experience how one handled. She said that the power wheelchair that I chose would come in two weeks- I had it in my apartment in less than 2 weeks. She also arranged for a technician to come the day after delivery to make some adjustments to the seat and footrest to add to my comfort. The power wheelchair had a price which was discounted $1804 off the MSRP making it very reasonably priced. I was very pleased with the whole experience.
